Celebrity Info: Harlow Lying on Bearskin Rug May Fetch $30,0

A photo negative of actress Jean Harlow lounging on a white bearskin rug may sell for as much as $30,000 at an auction of glamorous Hollywood images this week.

The negative and a custom print of the 1934 photograph by George Hurrell are among thousands of items in the auction, which will be held March 26 and 27 at Profiles in History in Calabasas, California.

The sale is expected to generate $3 million to $5 million, according to the auction house’s president, Joe Maddalena. The photographs were purchased over several decades by collector Michael H. Epstein.

The collection has “every iconic image of ‘30s and ‘40s glamour photography by every major photographer,” Maddalena said. “It’s all beautiful photography. His eye is uncanny.”

Epstein, whose mother was a model who posed for Richard Avedon, began collecting art and photography when he was a teenager. Over the decades, his collection grew large enough to fill three Hollywood warehouses with photographs of Gary Cooper, Bette Davis, Clark Gable, Joan Crawford, Veronica Lake, Johnny Weissmuller, Greta Garbo and other stars from Hollywood’s golden age.

“I kept buying and buying and buying, and I didn’t really know what I had until Joe Maddalena and I went to the warehouses,” Epstein, 55, said in an interview. “They were so stuffed with photos and memorabilia and archives that I didn’t have room to walk around.”

Charity Donation

Epstein said he and his partner Scott E. Schwimer will donate a “substantial portion” of the sales proceeds to to the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center. Epstein served on the center’s board for seven years. Sales also will benefit the Trevor Project, a nonprofit organization promoting acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youths.

The negative of the Harlow photograph is expected to sell for $20,000 to $30,000, according to Profiles in History. The photo was taken at Harlow’s home on Oct. 18, 1934, a month after the death of her husband, producer Paul Bern. It ran in the January 1935 issue of Vanity Fair, and was Hurrell’s first photograph for the magazine.

“The Harlow bear rug portrait was immediately regarded as the perfect expression of Hurrell’s technical and stylistic achievements and is his most important Hollywood portrait,” the auction catalog says.

Happy Resurrection Sunday – Which we call Easter

Happy Resurrection Sunday – Which we call Easter

Roughly 2,000 years ago Jesus Christ raised himself from the grave, he was all the way dead don’t play games with the story in your head, and he overcame that death to show that he/God is dominant over even death.

“Where o death is thy sting …”

Although we as Christ followers believe in our own mortality and depravity in sin, and our need for a redeemer to pay the penalty of our sins, and therefore the dominant role of the cross in helping us remember the horrible death and sacrifice of Christ

The Resurrection is in many ways more important. All other sacrifices died, the lamb the goat the bird, never to be seen again.

Jesus Christ rose again … that’s a really big deal. Quite possibly the most important event in human history, in 7,000 years, the resurrection of Jesus Christ. A 100% man, who was 100% God (of course we can’t understand that tension) died a horrible death and then three days later raised himself from that tomb, rolled away a multiple ton rock, and walked out still bearing the holes in his hands and feet … the marks of the price he paid on our behalf.

Sorry for this pause in political debate, but it’s well worth the pause. If you are offended at this blatant statement, or feel that no one has the right to state “truth” when there are so many different opinions in today’s society … welcome to post modern predictable thought … you too have been duped by humanities 7,000 year desire to be “my own person” and “not need a god”

Take a deep breath and dare yourself to ask “where do I stand for eternity?”

Happy Resurrection Sunday – Which we call Easter

What Google Never Told About Making Money With AdSense

Google wants a slice of your traffic. And they’re willing to pay big bucks! For those who have been complaining of high traffic and low sales, there’s simply no better way to cash in on those hard-earned visitors to your web pages.

AdSense makes it so easy! There’s no complicated software to install, no need to scout for affiliates, nothing to buy and no need to even have a merchant account. so…why isn’t everybody doing this? More importantly, why isn’t everybody making the most of it?

It’s “Hidden Money” “Seeing is believing”, they say. Most web masters love to obsessively track their visitors, earning and CTR’s several times a day. They love to see what’s there, but they often miss what can be.

AdSense doesn’t give you ultimate control over which ads are served, how the ads are rotated or what each click is worth. That’s a good thing, because it’s hands-free income. (it does give you some control though, and I’ll tell you how to use those controls.)

But many web masters still think that once you’ve stuck the ad sense code on your page, there’s little you can do except wait and watch.

Nothing could be further from the truth!

Google gives you a great deal of control over your ads, and especially their visual or graphic elements. By tweaking these elements to your advantage, you could easily – in as little as a few minutes – multiply your click-throughs many, many times over!

1. Getting Started With Blogger.com – want to get up and running with ad sense really fast? Open an account at blogger.com.

Blogger is like those old free websites that you could set up in a flash but which looked like they’d been cobbled together from bits of left-over graphics that no one else wanted. Except that the blog you create a blogger.com is the real McCoy. It’s professional, it looks great…and it takes just seconds to put together. All you have to do is choose a name and little for your blog, take your pick of the good range templates available and get writing.

You don’t have to worry about coding or desing work or images or anything else. If you change your mind about the way your blog looks, you can just pick a different template. All that’s left for you to do is write… and add AdSense.

Even that’s been made easy for you. Blogger.com lets you apply for ad sense directly from its site and it even gives you a preview of where your ad will appear (at the top of the page) and how it will look. While you’re waiting for your approval, you can play with fonts and colors so that you’re all set up and ready to start earning.

2. Search Engine Optimization – Of course, once you’re up, people have to know you’re there. One of the most important ways to do that is get yourself a high-ranking in a search engine.

There are lots of different search engines, but only three are really important: Google, yahoo! And MSN. If you want to take a shortcut, there are plenty of companies which will make the submissions for you and they’ll even optimize your site to get you as high on the rankings as possible.

3. Links – Your search engine ranking will depend on a number of factors. One of those factors is the number of sites that link to yours. As far as Google is concerned if lots of sites about model railways link to your model railway site, it must be a pretty good sign that people who like model railways think your site is good. So they’ll want to offer it to people who search for model railways, bringing you lots of free traffic.

Once you’ve got your site up and running you’ll want to persuade other sites to give you links. You could offer to exchange links and you can even set up a page that contains recommended links so that you’ll have somewhere to put them.

4. AdSense – Making The Money! – Once you’ve done all this, you’ll be ready to start using – and profiting from – AdSense. I’m going to talk you right through the process of singing up to AdSense from reaching Google to being ready to place your first ad. If you’ve been putting off signing up until you get time to figure out how to do it, you’ve just run out of excuses!

5. As Easy as 1-2-3 – The bottom line is that there are three ways to increase your AdSense revenue:

a – By Tweaking the Ads to make them more appealing to your visitors;

b – By Optimizing your Website/blog for better AdSense targeting (or what the Google folks call “content relevance”);

c – Tracking Visitor Response – If you don’t know what works (and what doesn’t work) in trying to increase your AdSense revenue…you’re shooting arrows in the dark!

The right tracking tools can reveal a great deal about your visitors and answer fundamental questions such as what they’re looking for and what makes them “CLICK”. Once you’ve figured that out, bingo! You’re on your way to big AdSense bucks! But it isn’t as straight-forward as it seems. If it were, there wouldn’t be so many grumpy people on AdSense forums, complaining about their low AdSense earnings. It’s not that they aren’t doing anything about it. The simply aren’t doing the right things.

6. How to “Tweak” Your Ads To Make Them “Click”! – Ad Formats: “Dress” your ads for success! How would you like your ads served? Banners? Skyscrapers? Rectangles? Squares? What about borders and background colors?

The choices can be overwhelming. Many people let Google decide for them-preferring to stick with the default settings. Big Mistake! From my own experience I can tell you that it’s like swapping a hundred-dollar bill for a ten-dollar one. For almost one year I settled for just a tenth of what I could have been making – just because I didn’t bother to control the looks and placement of my AdSense ads.

The various ad formats, colors and their placement on the web page can be done in thousands of combinations. You can literally spend hours every day experimenting with every possible combination. But you don’t want to, do you?

Let me give you a few “ground rules” that have sky-rocketed the CTR’s on my top-grossing pages:

Don’t “Look” Like An Ad – People don’t visit your website for ads. They want good content.

If you make the ads stick out with eye-popping colors, images or borders, that makes them easy to recognize as ads – and people work extra hard to avoid them.

The same goes for ads that are tucked away in the top, bottom or some other far corner of the page. So easy to ignore!

If you want people to click, make the ads look like an integral part of your content.”Today’s visitor are blind to banners, mad at pop-ups, weary of ads and skeptical of contests and giveaways. So how do you win their confidence? Simple… Don’t make your ads look like ads!”

Lets begin by reviewing each of the different types of ad available from AdSense and explaining their uses.. then I’ll introduce you to a few simple choices that rocketed my CTRs to incredible heights.

Meet the AdSense FamilyGoogle serves it ads in three flavors, whit each of those flavors coming in a range of different shapes and sizes. It is very important to understand the difference between each of these ads. Some are ideal for particular locations. Some should never be used in certain locations. And some should never be used at all.

The sample page at google.com/adsense/adformats lets you see all of the different kinds of ads at once. It even links to sample placements that demonstrate how the ads can be used. For the most part, I’d recommend that you ignore these sample placements.

I’ll talk about location in more detail later, but for now just bear in mind that many of the ads in the samples are just too out of the way to be noticed.

You can use them as a starting point if you want but you’ll save yourself a lot of time – and money 0 by taking advantage of the experience of myself and others, and following the recommendations here.

Text Ads – Google’s FinestText ads are probably the types of ad that you’re most familiar with . You get a box containing one or a number of ads with a linked headline, a brief description and a URL. You also get the “ads by Google” notice that appears on all AdSense ads.

There are eight different types of text ad. The most popular is probably the leaderboard. At 728 x 90, it stretches pretty much across the screen and while it can be placed anywhere, its mostly used at the top of the page, above the main document.

That’s a great location. It’s the first thing the reader sees and it offers a good selection of ads to choose from. When you’re just starting out and still experimenting with the types of ads that work best with your users, it’s a pretty good default to begin with.

Of course, you can put it in other places too. Putting a leaderboard ad between forum entries for example can be a pretty good strategy sometimes and is definitely worth trying. Overall, I think you’ll probably find that one of the smaller ads such as a banner of half-banner might blend in more there and bring better results.

And I think you can often forget about putting a leaderboard at the bottom of the page, despite what Google’s samples show you. It would certainly fit there but you have to be certain that people are going to reach the bottom of the page, especially a log page. You might find that only a small minority of readers would get that far, so you’re already reducing the percentage of readers who would click through.

Overall, I’d say that leaderboard are most effective blended into the top of the page beneath the navigation bar and sometimes placed between forum entries.

Banners (468 x60) and half-banners (234 x 60) are much more flexible like leaderboard you can certainly put these sort of ads at the top of the page, and lots of sites do it. Again, that’s something worth trying. You can put up a leaderboard for a week or so, swap it for a banner for another week or so, and compare the results.

Obama's Big Educational Goals Translate Into Republican Retaliation Against …

Be careful about setting up broad-stroke directives, President Obama. Politicians and bureaucrats of less noble intent may use them poorly, as is the case here in Florida, where the Republican-controlled government, egged on by a the hard-right Florida Chamber of Commerce, has turned your call for “accountability” in education into a jihad against teachers and their union which will benefit no one.

Florida Senate Bill 6 passed about a week ago, and House Bill 7189, its companion, is speeding through the State House.

Yes, from those same whacky politicians who gleefully carried out the No Child Left Behind (NCLB), or as I like to call it, the “No Child Left Untested” Act, we have teacher pay bills that threaten our educational system moving through the legislature in Tallahassee faster than a congressional pay raise.

State GOP leaders are positively skipping about what they see as a federal mandate from the President to strip the teachers of their tenure and bust the unions’ control of public education.

Mr. Obama decided, rather than shelve the NCLB, to embrace it and add:

“Let me be clear: If a teacher is given a chance, or three chances, but still does not improve, there is no excuse for that person to continue teaching,” the president said. “I reject a system that rewards failure and protects a person from its consequences.”

The result, in states like Florida, has been a swift move to take that mandate and use it. The Tampa Tribune’s Catherine Wittenburg reports

Your Daily Prayer For Healing-4/7/2010-Your Prayer For Today

Dear God/ess, I was only able to speak on MoonMooYou: The Collective Wisdom by leaning over with my head between my knees. And even then? Not so much!

Mary McManus and Trapper Sherwood were wonderful. It was like having loved one’s over to the house to watch the river with all the green of spring overflowing in our hearts.

They are dear friends whom I hope to meet face to face someday.

The lives we have on the Internet with our radio shows, our blogs, our lenses and all the millions of people we potentially contact everyday serves to open the parts of the brain scientists always told us would go unused.

Our Internet contacts are with people who think with broadened perspectives, who value love and communities and believe in helping those whose contributions add to all that is good in the world and all that is good about people.

One of the Prayer Blog topics we discussed that overlaps with Trapper’s work with natural sleep remedies was the overuse of prescription drugs in our society. Ambien, the classic sleep drug that we give to people in the hospital routinely, is dangerous and does not address the root cause of of insomnia in a person.

We discussed unwinding before bedtime, taking electronic equipment and TV’s out of the bedroom, meditating before sleep and listening to relaxing music. A nice long bath also goes a long way in relaxing the body for a good sleep.

I am sitting here by the river with Ulysses as the sky deepens in a red glow of a sunset and another day well lived and am thankful for everything that has ever happened or will ever happen in our sweet lifetimes.

It truly is all good. All the suffering in the world is a case of mistaken perception. We grow towards the sun just like the new shoots o springtime. We flower and bloom when we are ready.

And the time is NOW!

Om, Peace, Amen

Is it against NCAA rules for a player to talk to another coach during the season?

I am considering transfering schools this summer and I play baseball. I am visiting one of my friends at his college and might transfer here next year. Is it ok for me to go talk to the coach here or is that against some NCAA rule?

AFRICA/CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC – “The people celebrated Easter in the hope of deliverance …
Bangassou (Agenzia Fides) – “The LRA rebels have not taken away our right and desire to live the faith and celebrate Easter,” Fides was told by Bishop Juan Jose Aguirre Muños, Bishop of Bangassou in south-eastern Central African Republic, where the Ugandan rebels of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) continue to attack and loot among the civilians (see Fides 23/3/2010).
In the week before Easter, the LRA attacked the village of Agoumar on March 21(leaving 11 dead, including a woman burned alive, and a guerrilla fighter killed by the people who organized groups of self-defense). On March 25, they attacked Karmadar and on the 28th, Dembo, where Ugandan soldiers intervened, killing 15 guerrillas. For two years, Uganda maintains a military contingent in Central Africa, with the permission of local authorities, in order to hunt down the LRA.
“I went into the area where the LRA rebels are,” says Bishop Aguirre Muños. “The population is terrified and very concerned about the fate of more than 100 people, among whom are several girls who were abducted during attacks on villages committed in recent weeks.”
“On Good Friday, April 2, I went into the village of Agoumar, which was attacked March 21. I tried to comfort the population that has been sorely tried, instilling hope for a better future. However, LRA violence did not cease. The next day, April 3, Holy Saturday, 6 people were killed on the road to Rafa, the most important part of the area. The car was set on fire, as were the bodies of the poor victims, a further sign of insult against the helpless civilian population,” said Bishop Aguirre Muños.
“I celebrated Easter at Rafa. It was a celebration characterized by sadness and concern for the fate of the hostages, but open to the hope of peace brought by the Resurrection. We asked the Lord to comfort the victims and especially for the return of hostages to their families,” concluded the Bishop of Bangassou. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 7/4/2010)
