Good Friday Holiday Did Not,Will Not Change

At Davenport City Hall, phones have been ringing non-stop for the past few days.  The calls are from people around the country, voicing their opinions surrounding the city’s observance of  Good Friday.

It all started last Friday, when the city manager sent out a routine holiday closure notice to all city offices. The city manager says the notice accidentally referred to Good Friday, April 2, as “Spring holiday,” implying a name change for how the city observes the Christian holiday.

The words “Spring holiday” did not go unnoticed, prompting the local newspaper to report it over the weekend — right before the start of Holy Week.

Davenport City Council member Bill Edmond says no one on the city council had any warning about it… and was blindsided by the whole situation.

Edmond says his email inbox is jammed with emails from people from coast to coast, “some of them are saying, you’re a bunch of Communists for changing the name and we’re never going to visit Davenport. Others say we think that’s the right thing to do and most, 98% in the middle, saying thank God you went back to calling it Good Friday.”

Turns out the city never did or never plans to change the name Good Friday to be called anything else. Any change would first require a full vote by the city council. Davenport’s city manager, Craig Malin, takes full responsibility for the mess up calling it a “communication failure.”

So… how did this all start? Last May, Davenport’s Civil Rights Commission sent a letter to the city suggesting the city rename the “Good Friday” holiday to reflect the diversity of the community and because the Commission (a committee made up of 7 volunteers) felt it violated the separation of church and state. The city council never addressed it.

As the Easter weekend approaches, council member Bill Edmond says it’s time for everyone to move on, ”I don’t want to see Davenport have their image tarnished over something that was obviously a mistake from the get go.”

Hear from both sides involved in the report below…. and watch our next report live from Davenport, Iowa at 1:45 pm EST, on Fox News Channel.

URLs in #Facebook Status Updates are Now Clickable

« For Jeff Pulver, Today is Catch Up Thursday |Main| Facebook has become my Portal for Business Communication »

March 13, 2008URLs in Facebook Status Updates are Now Clickable

For months I have been wondering why Facebook did not support URLs to be clickable from inside of Status updates. I just noticed Facebook has enabled this new feature. By doing so, it now makes all of the twitter updates from my friends on Facebook much more readable and actionable.

Nice move Facebook! :)

Funny, someone on Twitter yesterday was just saying they didn’t see the use in using Twitter to update Facebook status but this change I think the value just went up — at least for me ‘cus I drop a lot of URLs into my Twitterstream, now all my FB friends will see them as well.

Thanks Jeff, looking forward to the Toronto Social Media Breakfast!

The Anatomy of Mountain Bike Wheels

Mountain biking is a popular sport that involves a specialized bicycle intended for the rough conditions that exist on off-road trails. This sport pits one cyclist against a field of other contenders all aiming to get through the course at the fastest possible speed. The terrain of an area has a major impact on the speed that these cyclists can travel at. The conditions can often be dangerous and hairy, therefore it is important to mountain bike riders to know that their mountain bike wheels are designed to handle the impacts and abuse that they are put through.

There are various categories of mountain biking, but all of these place the bike and rider in a similar situation, where it is the rider and their bike verses the natural terrain. The hardest part of competitive mountain biking is often the terrain. Mother Nature is very series opponent, but if you have the right bike and handle it properly Mother Nature can actually become your adversary rather than the competition.

Regardless of whether you intend to ride for competition or just for a way to pass some time, you will need to know that you have the proper equipment. Mountain biking is like any other sport or past-time in order to be proficient at it and stay safe you need to have the right equipment. In this case the proper equipment entails having a bike that is designed to provide you with the best possible ride while still holding up to the elements.

A mountain bike differs from a regular bike tin the way it is designed and constructed. These bikes incorporate features that are intended to handle the rough conditions that they will be used in. The elements of these bikes are all reinforced to provide durability and handle impact.

Most modern mountain bikes consist of front forks that provide dual suspension. These frames are mounted onto 26 to 29 inch wheels. These wheels and tires are wider and thicker than the tires and wheels on a standard road bike.

While mountain bike wheels are designed to be tougher and provide a better absorption to the shock of riding over rough terrain, they are still in many ways the same as wheels used on road bikes. Many of the features on a set of mountain bike wheels are the same as those on a road wheel.

A set of wheels is known as a Wheel set and are designed to fit into the frame and fork of mountain bikes via dropouts. The elements of a wheel for a bike are the same regardless of the type of bike. They all contain hubs, axles, bearings, spokes, and rims.

Mountain bike wheels contain what are known as clincher rims. These types of rims are used with clincher rims. This type of rim utilizes a wire or Kevlar fiber bead that interlocks with flanges in the rim. The tires contain a separate inner tube that is encased by the supports of the rim. This type of rim makes it possible to access the tube in the case of a leak and can allow the tube to be easily replaced or patched.

There are various types of mountain bike wheels the most popular is the 26 inch ISO 559 wheel. This wheel has a 559 mm diameter and an outside tire diameter of 26′. In many cases these tires may be tubeless, which allows the rider to run the bike with lower tire pressure, which permits better traction and shock absorption. Since they are tubeless they do not risk being punctured when they run with less pressure. Many riders will also use a sealing fluid that provides increased sealing capability and works well to avoid punctures from thorns or spikes.

Another type of mountain bike wheels is the 29 inch ISO 662. These wheels are 29 inches tall and use a clincher style wheel and are becoming increasingly more popular for cyclocross and cross country riding. These wheels which are also known as 29ers provide some benefits over other mountain bike wheels. These larger wheels handle rolling over obstacles such as branches and boulders, better than 26ers. They also handle soft materials such as sand better, and make a superior wheel for dessert conditions. These wheels are also ideal for taller riders.

There are also some disadvantages of 29ers; these include increased weight since they are larger. Weight is important in a mountain bike and therefore many of the components of a bike including the mountain bike wheels are constructed from a material that is light weight and durable. The increased size of the wheel means that it is more flexible which results in a weaker wheel. The other major problem is that many bikes are not designed to handle 29ers and must be customized to handle them.

Karma's a bitch

Treat others like how you would like people to treat you, karma’s only a bitch if you’re one.

Then I guess I must be the biggest bitch you’ve ever known.

Have uncertainty ever gripped you till you can’t breathe? Till all you do all day is jump to conclusions, and you end up gripping other people till they suffocate? It has to me.

It’s still choking me, I can’t clear things up. People won’t clear things up with me. I can’t find clear answers, my heart is getting in the way of my head. How can it not be? Whatever my head says my heart tells me another, I’m having a war with myself. It’s the classic angel/devil battle with yourself and honestly, it sucks.

Uncertainty is making me delusional. I dream ridiculous dreams all day, I know they won’t come true. Dreaming is good isn’t it? But how is it good when I’m throwing my dreams to people all day and hoping they’ll make it come true? I know they won’t, but I really hope some of them will. It’s making me so miserable.

One moment I think I’m ok, the other moment I’m not. My heart’s thinking of another person, my brain’s thinking of myself. Dear heart and brain, please make a decision and stop confusing me.

Oh god. I really want to stop all this. But when I’m writing this why do I still want it to continue?

I should had pinched myself when you were around, I always knew you were too good to be true. Goddamnit. I don’t wanna lose you -.-

And I wonder what I did to deserve this.

What the fuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk.

Updated at 9:44PM

Life was so much easier when it began with a “hello there!” and ended with your phone battery dying on you after a pleasant conversation. If you were willing to forget whatever happened and start again with a “hello there!”, I guarantee life would really be a breeze.

Humans, we think too much for our own good.

Karma's a bitch

April Fools Day, The Marvel iPad App, And An 'Iron Man 2' Promise In Today's …

Apple’s iPad managed to rebound as a topic of conversation in the comics industry this week, thanks to the outing of Marvel’s own custom comic-viewing app. Off course, any news that breaks today does so under the specter of April Fool’s Day, which did not go unnoticed, and I whole-heartedly support the stated opinion of writer Mike Oliveri

UConn women one win from making history – College basketball …

SAN ANTONIO – Imagine walking across the ledge of a 77-story building. Looking down would be dizzying for almost anybody, so the focus is always on being safe and secure with the next step.

And that’s how the Connecticut Huskies have won 77 straight basketball games.

Their amazing streak – every victory by double-digits – has brought UConn to the brink of a second straight national championship and the first back-to-back unbeaten seasons in women’s college basketball history.

Yet as they got ready to play Stanford in the title game Tuesday night, the Huskies weren’t about to talk about those glorious rewards finally being within reach.

After all, they can’t afford a misstep now.

“You don’t have enough room in your head to think about that,” star forward Maya Moore said Monday. “It’s something our coaches emphasize and we as a team have believed in. We have accepted that way of thinking and it’s worked great. We’re not going to change that mindset at this point. … You don’t want to let the potential of greatness to distract you.”

But isn’t only human nature to be thinking about cutting down the nets inside the cavernous Alamodome? To daydream about taking one of those pictures where you stand back-to-back with a teammate?

“We do a lot of things that are against human nature,” Moore said, laughing. “You just have to discipline yourself to stay focused. You may have to limit your contact with a lot of outside hoopla going on. But I really do think that because it’s such a habit for us, it’s not that hard. Ever since I’ve been in this program, it’s been that way. We just stay focused on the little things every day and if you look up at the end of the season, you should be where you want to be.”

It’s hard to argue with UConn’s formula.

Guided by coach Geno Auriemma, the Huskies have won five of the last 10 NCAA titles and reached at least the regional finals all but once since 2000.

This season, they have trailed only twice during the second half. This tournament, they have trailed a total of 8 seconds, and that was back in the first round.

“We’re in the position that every senior that plays college basketball wants to be in,” said Kalana Greene, who along with AP player of the year Tina Charles will be playing her final game for UConn on Tuesday night. “I think we’re just going to try to focus everyone up because these are the last couple of moments as a team. And we’re enjoying it. I know I am.”

For sophomore starters Tiffany Hayes and Caroline Doty, keeping the streak going is somewhat daunting. Think about it: They have yet to lose a college game.

“Coming out of high school, you’re thinking, OK, you win some and you lose some,” said Hayes, who lost her last high school game, a state championship in Florida. “Me not losing is surreal. But you have to take it in and move on. You can’t think about, `Oh, I haven’t lost a game so it’s not going to happen.’ Any one of these days it can happen, this year or next year.”

Auriemma is the master of it all, constantly pushing his players to be perfect.

Not to have perfect seasons or even perfect games, but to have what he calls “perfect effort.”

He also doesn’t talk about the streak, figuring that’s something that will take care of itself.

“I don’t know if they talk about it among themselves,” he said. “I don’t know what they’re doing. I don’t know how they do it. But whatever they’re doing, I hope they keep doing it.”
